20-Second Answer
The 2 established, editor-vetted options for this concern:
Under-eye darkness is a category, not a cause. Brown darkness often points to pigment. Blue or purple tones may come from visible vessels under thin skin. Puffiness can cast a shadow. Hollowing creates darkness because light falls into the depression. Dehydration and poor sleep can make all of it look worse, because apparently the under-eye area likes teamwork. The skin under the eyes is thin and mobile, so it shows everything quickly: fluid shifts, allergies, rubbing, sun exposure, volume loss, and irritation. This is also why strong products can backfire there. A retinoid that is fine on the cheek may make the under-eye peel, sting, and look older for a week. Not the target. The right plan starts by identifying the main driver. Pigment may respond to SPF, gentle brighteners, and avoiding rubbing. Vascular darkness may improve slightly with caffeine or certain procedures, but topicals are limited. Hollows are structural and may need filler, biostimulators, or accepting that concealer exists for a reason. The under-eye area rewards subtlety. Heavy-handed correction can look worse than the concern.
Find Your Cause
Not every cause is treated the same way — find the one that matches you.
Pigmentation
Brown under-eye darkness can come from melanin, rubbing, sun exposure, or inflammation.
Thin skin
Thin under-eye skin can show vessels and shadows more clearly.
Go gentler here: thinner skin irritates more easily — start with lower strengths and less frequent use than you would elsewhere on your face.
Hollowing
Volume loss creates a depression that reads as darkness even without pigment.
